Private Garden Construction (€50,000 to €100,000)
One of the main criteria for this courtyard construction was logistical and execution while having a quick turnaround for our client.
Description
The client’s garden was transformed into a contemporary oasis with cascading water, lush wall foliage, and bamboo. The homeowner’s desire for a quick turnaround on this confined outdoor space presented several design challenges. To meet the deadline, we prefabricated many elements off-site, including a handcrafted stone wall and central islands surrounded by water.
Process
The narrow site and courtyard garden location necessitated the use of a large mobile crane, positioned at the front of the dwelling. This allowed for materials and large plants to be lifted over the house and lowered into the tight basement area of the dwelling.
A lot of the elements were pre fabricated. The waterfall backdrop consisted of stone wall finish – pre-built by hand into galvanised steel box (hidden) sections.
Large prefabricated round steel platform sections were assembled off site also. These were completed in a resin bound finish. These were positioned at different levels creating a stepped formation to allow movement above the level of the water.
Large prefabricated plant pots to house the large 6m bamboo planting were also fabricated off site and along with all the large elements were loaded into position by the mobile crane operator, a process that was a very well executed and strategically planned operation.
Judges’ Comments:
“An urban garden utilising the formal layout and structure to create an instant oasis.”
“This garden has transformed the space around this house. I has the effect of pulling the house space out into the garden and merging the two together. Great use of hard and soft elements and structures to create the instant maturity to the garden.”
