Private Garden Construction (over €250,000)

A complete country house transformation, the client homeowner has completed a contemporary extension and compassionate restoration to his grandparent’s farm situated in the Irish midlands. Our brief was to pay close attention to unique design features created by our garden design client and homeowner to produce a standard of craftsmanship which would result in a garden of outstanding quality.

We approach every garden with a construction plan that suits each individual garden, with an agreed body of works to be undertaken that accurately reflects the design, and the desires of our clients in the design and to reflect the owner’s love of contemporary taste. Specific areas were asked to be blended easily for adult, kid and dog areas and further privacy on the lower garden boundaries had to be incorporated.

All areas of this vast landscape included:

Construction of a dry-stone boundary wall to the front of the parterre garden and to the backyard parking area and remodelling of the parterre garden and cobble courtyard. The areas surrounding the old dwelling and the contemporary extension included new continuous paths throughout the woodland area.

The landscape also included a hazelwood tunnel walkway. This leads to a new build bespoke retreat – this is a custom-built hideaway overlooking an area of Ireland that includes mature trees and lakes on the client’s land. It is surrounded by estate railing that amounts to at least 1km in length. An existing 2 way driveway has been converted into a single entrance, which boasts a vast granite cobble apron, complemented by a horseshoe shaped entrance onto the farmland and dwelling.

Judges’ Comments:

“The multilayered design responds well to the traditional countryside dwelling and buildings. A rejuvenation of the landscape with a modern twist without detracting from the original features.”

“This garden superbly fits the traditional style of the country house and surroundings and sensitively incorporates gates, fences, natural stone and a very strong and generous planting palette.”
