Private Garden Construction (€100,000 to €250,000)
Located closely to the sea, it presents its homeowners with beautiful bay views. The site was completely remodelled and reconstructed with a collective of various features and materials. These included large corten steel gates, handcrafted stone walls, glass balustrades, a raised dining area as well as a sunken fire pit area.
The project, constructed concurrently with the main house, utilised exposed aggregate concrete for the boundary walls, extending them seamlessly onto the seabed. This design choice aimed to harmonise with the existing landscape features. Porcelain tiles were used on the upper terraces to achieve a cohesive aesthetic with the interior flooring of the main house.
The dry sandy soil conditions and the direct influences from the salty sea breezes had a significant effect for a planting scheme that has continued to blossom throughout the seasons. Unending curved and folded corten steel walls, preparatory work in resin bond driveway finish, custom made gate entrance and matching pedestrian gate, are other elements that have been constructed in-house with a high level of craftsmanship along with corten steel light-boxes. Custom made exposed aggregate front steps, bespoke curved teak bench and firepits, installation of glassware balustrades, installation of corten steel landscape elements, matching stone wall builds, shower and sanitising elements, shuttered outdoor kitchen frame.
The coastal location of this project required all soil to be imported, necessitating a well-organised logistical and machinery plan. This plan included a phased approach to construction, starting with the sea-facing side of the dwelling and progressing towards the entrance gate.
Judges’ Comments:
“The flowing curvilinear design responds very well to its landscape setting, using a diverse range of planting that also is responsive to the environment. Very well presented and executed”
“This design build landscape project is of the highest standard across all the elements used. It is stuffed with quality and character that compliments the house and addresses its coastal location.”
